Matt Hancock’s Covid inquiry appearance has heaped more pressure on the former Health Secretary, and a new viral video has pulled his comments apart.

Under questioning he said was “profoundly sorry for each death”, and that he understood why some people would find it “hard to take that apology from me”.

Hugo Keith KC, lead counsel to the Covid Inquiry, pushed Mr Hancock over what happened during the pandemic and leading up to it.

Disaster

Hancock stressed that the “attitude, the doctrine of the UK was to plan for the consequences of a disaster”.

He said the government was focused on different questions, such as “can we buy enough body bags?” and “where are we going to bury the dead?”

“That was completely wrong,” Hancock added.

Then Mr Hancock said: “The only answer I can give is because I was assured that we had the best system in place in the world.

“In hindsight, I wish I’d spent that short period of time [before the pandemic] changing the entire attitude to how we respond to a pandemic.”
