I loved how Michael Parkinson could trust guests like Billy Connolly to come on and deliver, despite not knowing what they might come out with and taking those massive risks with relative celebrity strangers, like Angie Dickinson & Barbara Woodhouse x #FartInASpacesuit #RIPParky pic.twitter.com/guIue4s57W

Family statement

A statement from Sir Michael’s family said: “After a brief illness Sir Michael Parkinson passed away peacefully at home last night in the company of his family.”

Sir David Attenborough led the tributes, saying the host “always wanted the interviewee to shine”.

Striking workers

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) shared a clip of an interview with Parkinson and actor Kenneth Williams.

Williams attacked workers for taking industrial action, and Parkinson’s response, was epic.

Have a listen for yourself!

Indeed, his father was a miner and he spoke emotionally about his working class roots.
He loved cricket and the age of great popular music, passions I share so he was very much a hero of mine 💔

Williams was wrong here, but I love his reaction to Parky's blunt reply.
Kenneth Williams was one of the great chat show interviewees, and, of course, he always shone on Parkinson.
RIP to them both. https://t.co/UP7R7umAq1
