Billy Bragg was on Sky News and was told off for using a swear word, but he got the last laugh.

He said to presenter Ian King the word: “sh*t.”

He was talking about a song he wrote inspired by Oliver Anthony’s controversial hit stateside.

Anthony became the first artist to debut at top of Billboard Hot 100 despite having no prior chart history, with a song that has drawn backlash for its stereotypes of welfare recipients.

The conservative-leaning hit has drawn backlash for its anti-taxes sentiment and for invoking the stereotype of the “welfare queen”. (“Lord, we got folks in the street, ain’t got nothin’ to eat / And the obese milkin’ welfare,” he sings in the second verse. “Well, God, if you’re 5-foot-3 and you’re 300 pounds / Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of Fudge Rounds.”)

Billy Bragg Apologise

Returning to Bragg’s naughty word, King then asked him to apologise.

Ian King said: “Billy, I must apologise, because you said a rude word..”

Billy Bragg said he would go over what he just said, and couldn’t think of the word, then, tongue in cheek said, “I do apologise… what did I say? Socialism.”
