A tree at the Sycamore Gap that featured in Kevin Costner epic Robin Hood Prince of Thieves has been cut down illegally.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm an investigation has been launched following damage to the Sycamore Gap Tree in Northumberland. Enquiries are ongoing to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed.”

The large tree at Sycamore Gap, next to Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, was apparently cut down overnight.

Northumberland National Park Authority officials believe the tree, known as Robin Hood’s Tree, was “deliberately felled” and asked people to stay away from the scene.

Sycamore Gap Robin Hood

There is fury from many many people.

There’s some absolutely weird people in this country. Honestly, psychopath level. The Sycamore tree at Sycamore Gap along Hadrian’s wall. Cut down for no other reason than pure spitefulness, and to get a reaction.

Mayor Jamie Driscoll messaged: “I can’t express how angry I am at the vandalism of the tree at #SycamoreGap. People have had their ashes scattered there. People have proposed there. I’ve picnicked there with my wife and kids. It’s part of our collective soul. We must bring whoever did this to justice.”

Robin Hood

Here is the tree in the film.

For 80s/90s kids who didn’t grow up in the North East, the #sycamoregap tree is featured near the beginning of 1991’s Robin Hood Prince of Thieves 🎬 https://t.co/RtIcFkFbT0 pic.twitter.com/bsX0y2DEZo
