Boris Johnson’s Covid Inquiry performance was a pathetic, weak-willed and made your skin crawl.

During the session yesterday he insisted he was not properly warned about the potential seriousness of Covid during early 2020, reports The Guardian.

Also in the same paper sketch writer John Crace’s seething article about Johnson had the headline: “Baffled, punch-drunk Boris Johnson is forced to contemplate a moral universe.’

We will get to the front pages in a moment but let’s have a quick chat about deleted WhatsApp messages.

He was asked why 5,000 WhatsApp messages from early 2020 have disappeared.

His response, below, was hardly even a response.

He said: “I don’t know the exact reason, but it looks as though it’s something to do with the app going down and then coming up again, but somehow automatically erasing all the things between that date when it went down and the moment when it was last backed up.”

He was also asked about an exchange of messages from December 20, 2021 between Cabinet Secretary Simon Case and his former principal private secretary Martin Reynolds.

Mr Case wrote: “PM is mad if he doesn’t think his WhatsApps will become public via Covid inquiry — but he was clearly not in the mood for that discussion tonight!”

Boris Johnson replied: “I don’t remember that conversation to which the Cabinet Secretary is referring and I’ve handed over all the relevant WhatsApps.”

Terry Christian wrote a message on X many might agree with when he penned: “Interesting that little has been made in the media of Boris Johnson’s missing 5,000 Whatsapp messages between 30th Jan 2020 and June 2020 . How on earth is this lowlife lying grifter able to get away with this.”

Newspapers

So what did the other papers make of his performance yesterday?

The Mirror’s front page was a very sombre affair as you can see.
