In a recent interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, former President Donald Trump faced probing questions about the personnel choices made during his tenure in the White House. The interview, which aired on Sunday, shed light on the challenges and controversies surrounding the staffing decisions of the Trump administration.

Bartiromo didn’t mince words as she confronted Trump with criticism from his critics regarding what they perceive as numerous personnel mistakes. Trump, known for his “best people” pledge during his presidential campaign, acknowledged the scrutiny but swiftly shifted the focus to his predecessors, stating, “No, of course, but everybody does. Obama had. What about Biden? Look at the people running this Biden thing. The difference is I fire people.”

The interview highlighted the significant turnover in senior- and Cabinet-level positions during Trump’s presidency, surpassing the rate observed in previous administrations. For instance, the Brookings Institute reported that while President Barack Obama experienced only three Cabinet secretaries turnover in four years, Trump saw 14 changes in the same roles.

Bartiromo pressed Trump on the potential challenges of returning to office, questioning how he could ensure a loyal network of individuals given the previous turnover. Trump responded confidently, stating, “I will, and so will anybody else that gets in as a Republican, these people are sick, these are sick people.”

The conversation delved into Trump’s initial promise to hire only “the best and most serious people.” However, a review of his presidency reveals a pattern of dismissals and public conflicts with key figures such as William Barr (attorney general), Jeff Sessions (attorney general), Rex Tillerson (secretary of state), James Mattis (defense secretary), John Bolton (national security adviser), H.R. McMaster (national security adviser), John Kelly (homeland security secretary and White House chief of staff), Mike Pence (vice president), and Kayleigh McEnany (press secretary), among others.

As Trump navigated through Bartiromo’s pointed questions, the interview offered a glimpse into the controversies and decisions that defined his leadership in the realm of personnel appointments.
