In a recent ITV documentary, Rishi Sunak, the current Tory leader, refrained from ruling out the possibility of reinstating disgraced former Prime Minister Boris Johnson into the cabinet, amidst growing speculation about his leadership. Sunak downplayed the internal plots against him as “minuscule.”

The rift between the two prominent figures widened after Sunak’s resignation from the cabinet precipitated Johnson’s departure from office. However, Sunak disclosed that he maintains occasional communication with Johnson, with their last conversation occurring late last year.

Regarding the potential return of Johnson, who resigned as an MP following the Partygate scandal, Sunak remained tight-lipped, asserting he would not discuss “personnel matters” publicly. Notably, David Cameron’s appointment as Foreign Secretary last year, alongside his entry into the House of Lords, was cited as an example of collaboration despite documented differences.

Sunak and Johnson previously had a huge falling out.

Despite facing mounting pressure from MPs, donors, and former aides, including those aligned with Johnson, Sunak sought to downplay the threats to his leadership, labeling them as “minuscule.” A controversial poll, funded by anonymous donors, suggested a significant Labour victory unless Sunak relinquished his leadership position.

The situation escalated further as Tory peer Lord Frost, who orchestrated the poll, faced warnings of losing party support unless he disclosed the identities of the financiers. Additionally, senior Tory figure Sir Simon Clarke, associated with Liz Truss and Johnson, publicly advocated for Sunak’s ousting, indicating a potential internal rift within the party.

In response to his detractors, Sunak emphasized the importance of party unity, highlighting the disparity between internal debates and the ideological divide with opposition leader Keir Starmer. Moreover, Sunak addressed criticisms regarding his personal wealth, dismissing them as irrelevant and indicative of a “lack of ambition” for the nation.
