South Africa has taken urgent action by submitting a formal request to the International Court of Justice regarding Israel’s military activities in the Gaza Strip, particularly targeting the city of Rafah. The move follows concerns over potential violations of provisional orders issued by the court in a recent genocide case involving Israel.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, South Africa declared its appeal to The Hague-based court to assess whether Israel’s stated intention to launch a ground offensive in Rafah, where a significant number of Palestinians have sought refuge, constitutes a further breach of Palestinian rights in Gaza.
The International Court of Justice had issued preliminary rulings in response to South Africa’s accusations of genocide by Israel in Gaza. Among these rulings was a directive for Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent Palestinian casualties and the destruction of Gaza. However, the court fell short of mandating a ceasefire, a demand made by South Africa.
In light of ongoing hostilities and mounting casualties, South Africa now seeks additional provisional measures against Israel. The statement from the office of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized grave concerns over the potential humanitarian consequences of Israel’s military offensive in Rafah.
