Ed Miliband, the shadow climate and net zero secretary, delivered a sharp rebuke to Reform UK leader Richard Tice during a heated exchange in the House of Commons over the future of green energy.

The confrontation erupted as Tice, known for his prominent role in the Brexit campaign, criticised Miliband’s strong support for renewable energy projects. Tice claimed that wind farms were placing an undue financial burden on taxpayers, accusing Miliband of being “obsessed with renewable energy” and arguing that renewables are more costly than traditional fossil fuels.

Tice challenged Miliband, saying: “Will the secretary of state be honest and admit that renewable energy is more expensive, not cheaper?”

However, Miliband firmly hit back, dismissing Tice’s claims and warning that a continued reliance on fossil fuels would lead to higher energy bills and make households worse off. Referring to the 2016 Brexit referendum slogan, Miliband argued that transitioning to green energy would allow the UK to “take back control” of energy prices, shielding the public from volatile global markets.

He said: “Whether fossil fuels are produced domestically or abroad, they are sold on the international market. That’s why the British people paid the price, and the Government had to spend £94 billion. The only way to get off the rollercoaster of international gas markets and take back control is to become a clean energy superpower.”
