Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and philanthropist, shared that he would be “tens of billions poorer” if he had the chance to redesign the tax system.

Speaking to Kevin E. G. Perry about his Netflix documentary series, Gates covered a range of topics from artificial intelligence to environmental issues, and even addressed the bizarre conspiracy theories that have targeted him.

Despite his immense wealth, Gates expressed support for more progressive taxation and the estate tax, highlighting his belief in the need to prevent generational wealth from concentrating economic and political power unfairly. “If I designed the tax system, I would be tens of billions of dollars poorer than I am,” Gates explained, adding that making the tax system more progressive could be achieved without significantly deterring the incentive to innovate and achieve.

Gates also tackled the issue of misinformation and its widespread dissemination through the internet—a medium he once believed would enhance factual understanding globally. Reflecting on the unexpected direction public discourse has taken online, Gates expressed surprise at the scale of misinformation, particularly the outlandish conspiracy theories that portray him in a sinister light.

In his Netflix series “What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates,” he shares an optimistic outlook on the future, where AI and scientific innovation could potentially solve major global issues like climate change and disease eradication. However, he acknowledged the challenges in balancing free speech with the need to curb harmful misinformation and its consequences on public health and safety.

Despite the controversies surrounding his wealth and influence, Gates emphasised his commitment to using his resources for global betterment. He discussed his philanthropic efforts through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which focuses on health and education initiatives globally. These efforts, according to Gates, have a more immediate and profound impact compared to his role in the personal computer revolution.

Looking forward, Gates highlighted the importance of governmental action in major societal shifts, such as those anticipated with advances in AI and climate change mitigation. He stressed that while philanthropy can pilot innovative projects, substantial, scalable changes require robust government intervention and policy reform.

Gates’s comments come at a time when the debate over wealth inequality and the social responsibilities of billionaires continues to intensify. His advocacy for a more equitable tax system and his active engagement in philanthropy reflect an awareness of the need for systemic change to address global challenges.

“What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates” is set to premiere on Netflix on 18 September, offering more insights into his vision for a technologically advanced and equitable world.
