Beloved actress Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89, her family has confirmed. Known for her iconic roles in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films, Dame Maggie was a legend of both stage and screen.

In a statement released by her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, they shared the news of her peaceful passing in hospital early on Friday, 27th September. “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, with friends and family at the end,” the statement read.

The family expressed their gratitude to the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their compassionate care during her final days. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”

Smith’s sons also requested privacy during this difficult time, stating, “We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
