Conservative MPs have expressed their frustration and are threatening to resign if Labour enforces its proposed crackdown on second jobs.

The new rules, passed by the Commons in July, will come into effect this month, leaving some Tory MPs questioning their future in politics.

According to The Times, up to a dozen Tory MPs are considering stepping down ahead of the next general election due to the new restrictions on outside employment.

MPs who served under Rishi Sunak’s government but were overlooked for key roles are reportedly among those most likely to quit.

One former cabinet minister shared their growing disillusionment, saying they are “tired of the job” and considering how much more they could earn outside of politics. Another MP has been offered a role in the United States and is weighing their options if they don’t secure a high-ranking position in the next government.

In July, the Commons approved Labour’s plan to tighten restrictions on second jobs for MPs, eliminating loopholes that allowed them to advise employers on public policy or parliamentary workings.

Commons leader Lucy Powell explained the changes aim to close potential gaps in the rules, ensuring MPs remain focused on serving their constituents and restoring public trust after previous scandals.
