UK’s former Brexit negotiator backs closer EU ties as ‘common sense’

Shame we didn’t see this plastered on the side of a bus, really.

David Davis, former Brexit negotiator and Conservative MP, has said that building closer ties with Europe is simply “common sense.” This remark, made in an interview with The Telegraph, marks a surprising shift for someone who once led the UK out of the EU.

Patel’s New Role in Europe Relations

Davis was asked about Priti Patel’s appointment as Shadow Foreign Secretary. Known for her strong support of Brexit, Patel will oversee UK-EU relations and counter Labour leader Keir Starmer’s aim for closer ties with Europe. While Davis praised Patel as a “clear public thinker,” he hinted at the need for a practical approach to Europe.

‘Common Sense’ in Trade with Europe

Davis admitted that forming agreements with European nations involves “important trade-offs.” Yet he pointed out that maintaining strong relations with such a “nearby trading partner” simply makes sense. This admission from a leading Brexit advocate has sparked debate, as he now sees closer ties with Europe as both sensible and inevitable.

A Shift in Brexit Thinking?

Although the Prime Minister is committed to not reversing Brexit, Davis’s comments suggest a more flexible approach. With Starmer aiming to reset UK-EU relations, Davis’s remarks may reflect a changing attitude within the Conservative Party.
