A Mask sequel? Jim Carrey says it’s possible with the perfect idea

Jim Carrey might suit up again – if the story has the right punchline.

The 1994 comedy classic might get another chapter, but Carrey isn’t rushing to go green just yet.

“It’s Not About the Money (Mostly)”

Jim Carrey has hinted he might don the iconic green mask again—but only if the concept blows his mind. Speaking to Comicbook.com, Carrey said, “Oh gosh, it has to be the right idea. It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… but as soon as a good idea or a group of people you love working with comes along, things tend to change.”

Sounds like Carrey is keeping the door slightly ajar for a sequel to The Mask, the film that saw his character, Stanley Ipkiss, transform from a meek bank clerk into a whirlwind of mayhem whenever he put on a mystical, reality-bending mask. The original also starred Cameron Diaz in her breakout role and remains a cult favourite nearly three decades later.

Could the Grinch Return Too?

It seems Carrey is feeling nostalgic lately. In another recent interview, he mentioned being open to revisiting his How the Grinch Stole Christmas role—under one condition. “If we could figure out the Grinch costume,” he joked, referencing the “excruciating” full-body prosthetic he endured during the 2000 festive hit. “It wasn’t easy being green,” indeed.

What About Sonic?

Carrey hasn’t completely disappeared from Hollywood. He’ll reprise his role as the delightfully over-the-top Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, hitting cinemas on December 20. When asked why he returned to the role, Carrey joked with the Associated Press, “I came back because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a stretch. And also… I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”

A Careful Comeback

Jim Carrey has stepped back from Hollywood in recent years, seemingly enjoying the quieter life. But the thought of revisiting fan-favourite characters seems to intrigue him—if the stars align. Whether it’s Stanley Ipkiss, the Grinch, or another surprise return, one thing’s clear: Carrey hasn’t lost his knack for making us laugh.

Now, the ball is in Hollywood’s court to come up with “the right idea.” Anyone got a pitch for The Mask 2? Preferably one that’s as bonkers as the original!
