The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has called for Robert Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, to be sacked after leaked messages revealed he described himself as a “great admirer” of a far-right X account, Inevitable West. The account, which boasts over 130,000 followers, is known for its inflammatory and Islamophobic posts.
Adding to the criticism, Labour MP Oliver Ryan said it was “very concerning” that someone with such views had been selected as the Conservative Party’s justice secretary.
Leaked Messages Spark Outrage
In the leaked correspondence, Jenrick reportedly wrote to the far-right account:
“I am a great admirer of your tweets. You are right to hold me to account, like any politician. I think we agree, however, on what needs to happen.”
The account regularly shares extreme rhetoric, including recent posts calling for mosque raids, banning the Quran, and mass deportations.
The Labour Muslim Network deemed Jenrick’s comments “shocking,” while the MCB’s secretary general, Zara Mohammed, stated:
“It seems impossible for Mr Jenrick to be unaware of the hateful and Islamophobic content shared by this account. Yet he not only follows it but openly admires its views. His position is untenable.”
Muslim Council Demands Action
The MCB has urged Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch to act decisively, stating:
“This is a test of Ms Badenoch’s leadership. By failing to address this, she risks further embedding Islamophobia within the party. Jenrick must be dismissed immediately, and an investigation into his track record should begin.”
Jenrick has yet to clarify the extent of his agreement with Inevitable West’s controversial views, but his public comments on X (formerly Twitter) have raised additional eyebrows.
Comments Add Fuel to the Fire
Responding to a recent attack on a German Christmas market, Jenrick posted:
“The public deserve politicians who will implement the policies necessary so they can attend Christmas markets in safety. End mass migration. Revoke visas and deport those who hate us. Show no tolerance for extremists. We don’t have to live like this.”
While Jenrick has not directly commented on the leaked messages, critics argue his remarks echo the far-right rhetoric of the account he appears to admire.
Official Complaint Filed
The MCB is preparing a formal complaint to the Conservative Party, citing breaches of the Nolan Principles, which demand integrity and accountability from public officials.
Meanwhile, Jenrick’s spokesperson has remained tight-lipped, declining to address the mounting backlash.
