Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has made a dramatic offer: he’s willing to resign—but only if Ukraine gets a NATO membership in return.

With US support for Ukraine shifting under Donald Trump, tensions are at an all-time high. Now, as Ukraine marks the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, Zelenskyy has proposed a bold trade-off: his presidency for his country’s security.

‘If it guarantees Ukraine’s safety, I’ll go’

Speaking at a press conference, Zelenskyy made his stance clear:

“If it is absolutely necessary for me to leave my post, I am ready to do so. If I can exchange it for NATO membership—without prolonged discussions—then immediately.”

This move directly counters claims from Trump, who recently labelled him a dictator. Zelenskyy dismissed the accusation, stating he has no intention of clinging to power but only wants to secure Ukraine’s future.

Ed Davey slams Trump’s ‘betrayal’

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey wasted no time in calling out Donald Trump over his stance on Ukraine.

“Shame on Donald Trump for his betrayal of Ukraine. Zelenskyy should never have been put in this position. But these words show he is the exact opposite of Trump—a selfless, patriotic, true leader.”

With US-Ukraine relations becoming increasingly strained, Zelenskyy’s offer is a stark reminder of just how high the stakes have become.
