Tory MP suggests Trump could be a ‘Russian asset’ after Ukraine aid freeze

Trump cuts Ukraine aid, calls Zelenskyy a dictator, and praises Putin. What next?

A senior Tory MP has suggested that Donald Trump could be a ‘Russian asset’ after the US president abruptly paused military aid to Ukraine overnight.

Former government minister Graham Stuart didn’t hold back in a post on X, writing:

“We have to consider the possibility that President Trump is a Russian asset. If so, Trump’s acquisition is the crowning achievement of [Vladimir] Putin’s FSB career – and Europe is on its own.”

That’s a bold claim, but given Trump’s recent actions, it’s not hard to see why some are concerned.

Trump’s move leaves Ukraine in a tough spot

The US has been Ukraine’s biggest military backer since Putin launched his invasion. However, Trump—keen to end the war on his terms—chose to cut off that support.

The goal? Force Ukraine to the negotiating table with Russia.

This came just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy admitted that peace was still “very, very far away.”

Trump wasn’t impressed. His response?

“This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!”

With US aid on hold, Europe now faces the fallout, as Ukraine depends on outside support to hold off Russia’s aggression.

Trump’s shift away from the West’s pro-Ukraine stance

It’s been less than six weeks into Trump’s second term, and he’s already distanced himself from the West’s united front on Ukraine.

He’s made no secret of his admiration for Putin, and his scepticism of Ukraine’s NATO ambitions.

Last month, he even said:

“Russia has somebody right on their doorstep, and I could understand their feelings about that.”

Trump has also falsely claimed Ukraine started the war, called Zelenskyy a “dictator” because elections were postponed due to the war, and humiliated him during his recent White House visit.

A deal gone cold

Trump and his vice-president, JD Vance, have also accused Zelenskyy of being ungrateful for US support.

As tensions escalated, the White House scrapped a press conference where Ukraine and the US were meant to sign a deal on sharing Ukraine’s mineral wealth as repayment for past military aid.

Trump had framed the deal as a key step towards ending the war, but now, with US support in question, Ukraine is left scrambling for alternatives.
