Ex-Tory minister tried to charge taxpayers £3,000 for CV help

Rachael MacLean’s £3,000 CV claim got rejected – and for good reason.

A former Tory minister thought it was perfectly reasonable to ask taxpayers to foot the bill for nearly £3,000 worth of CV-writing support.

Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

Rachael MacLean, who lost her Redditch seat to Labour’s Chris Bloore, submitted an expenses claim for £2,983 to cover “CV support,” according to The Mirror. However, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) took one look at it and said absolutely not.

Who is Rachael MacLean?

MacLean once served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Sajid Javid when he was Chancellor. More recently, she worked as a Director of Strategy for Kemi Badenoch and is now a Tory peer.

Her expenses claim was submitted on the same day Rishi Sunak stood in the rain to announce the general election. The timing couldn’t have been worse.

Was the CV support for her or someone else?

That part is unclear. The Mirror notes that it’s not known whether the claim was for herself or a staff member. Either way, IPSA rejected it, stating it was “not claimable.”

Given how the Tories spent years preaching about fiscal responsibility, trying to bill taxpayers for CV support isn’t a great look.
