Watch: Jeremy Corbyn slams Labour’s welfare cuts – “It’s utterly disgraceful”

“For a Labour Government to announce that more families are going into poverty because of a decision they’re making - it’s utterly disgraceful.”

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has launched a scathing attack on Sir Keir Starmer’s government over its welfare cuts. Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Corbyn didn’t mince words, calling the cuts “disgraceful” and slamming the party for abandoning its principles.

People did not elect a Labour government to push 50,000 more children into poverty.

💰 The Cuts That Sparked Outrage

The controversy centres around cuts to welfare spending that are set to save £4.8 billion from the budget. According to Labour, these cuts will impact some of the poorest, including disabled people and vulnerable families. The decision is expected to push 50,000 children into poverty. Corbyn, clearly angered by the move, told Sky News, “I never thought I’d hear the day when a chancellor would say they’re taking £5 billion from the very poorest disabled people in our society. It is a disgrace.”

🏛️ Corbyn’s Brutal Letter

Corbyn didn’t stop there. He shared a harsh letter criticising the Labour government’s decision to go back on promises made to the British public. In the letter, he wrote, “After 14 years of Conservative rule, we were told that austerity was over. That was a lie.” He also condemned Labour’s current direction, saying the policies no longer align with the party he once led.

💬 What’s at Stake?

With the new proposal, the tax burden is reaching a record high, and the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has slashed growth forecasts from 2% to just 1%. At the same time, welfare spending will fall between 2026 and 2027. These cuts could have devastating effects on those already struggling to make ends meet.
