Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is facing heat after asking a ‘deeply irresponsible’ question during Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).
Tariffs on the Horizon
On the same day, Donald Trump was expected to announce a major tariff plan, which the White House has dubbed ‘Liberation Day.’ These tariffs could affect a range of countries, including potentially the UK, but it’s unclear at this stage who will be targeted.
In the lead-up to Trump’s announcement, Badenoch decided to raise the issue during PMQs, despite the fact that many details were still unknown. Some nine hours before Trump’s announcement, Badenoch asked Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his thoughts on the tariffs. However, her timing didn’t sit well with many.
‘Irresponsible’ Timing
Critics quickly slammed her for trying to make political points on a highly sensitive matter. One person on X (formerly Twitter) called her actions “deeply irresponsible,” adding: “She knows full well they’re mid-negotiation, and one word could cost thousands of jobs. A real opposition would show unity.”
Starmer’s Response
Starmer was quick to respond, reassuring MPs that the government was taking a “calm, pragmatic approach” to the looming tariffs. He emphasised that talks were ongoing with the US to secure a broader economic prosperity deal.
“We’re working with all sectors that could be affected, always guided by our national interest,” he said. “At this moment, it’s crucial not to jump to conclusions. We won’t rule anything out.”
He didn’t hold back when responding to Badenoch’s question, saying: “She was the trade secretary, Mr Speaker, who failed to get a trade deal with the US!”

With discussions still very much in the air, the last thing the government needs is internal squabbling. The tariff situation is a tricky one, and whether this political clash will have lasting repercussions is yet to be seen.
