Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced new government initiatives aimed at supporting British carmakers and boosting economic growth.

Among these initiatives is a policy to ban the sale of new diesel and petrol cars by 2030, with exemptions for certain luxury vehicles.

Public reaction on social media has been mixed, with some expressing skepticism and criticism towards the government’s approach, while others are concerned about the impact on the automotive industry.

It comes as luxury supercar firms such as Aston Martin and McLaren will still be allowed to keep producing petrol cars beyond 2030, because they only manufacture a small number of vehicles per year.

Craig Murray wrote: “This is incredible. In 2030 the sale of new diesel and petrol cars will be banned in the UK – except to the ultra-rich, whose McLarens, Bentleys and Aston Martins will be exempt. The most polluting of all. You couldn’t make it up.”

I though you were actually joking. And the fine per vehicle would hardly have affected them anyway tbh. Why is the fine not proportional to the price of the vehicle… don't bother answering that actually. pic.twitter.com/64pbA9Xc4E

Up there with the classic cars exemption from London's ULEZ.

We can have:

1. Elites who don't wish to do anything about climate change, or

2. Elites who want other people to reduce their consumption to fix it.

Both, in their own ways, will make us reduce our consumption.
