Ed Balls reminded Labour’s Lisa Nandy of her past words this morning, calling out her criticism of Boris Johnson’s trade deal approach with Donald Trump. The moment was a reminder that political positions often change depending on the situation.

🧐 What Nandy Said About Trump’s Deal

Back in July 2019, Nandy wasn’t shy about calling out Boris Johnson for seeking a trade deal with then-President Trump. She called it “pathetic,” accusing Johnson of begging for a deal after alienating European allies. Her tweet on X (then Twitter) said:

“Boris Johnson will never stand up to Trump. He’s alienated our European allies and is now in the pathetic position of begging the US for a trade deal. This is a bad day for the UK.”

Fast forward to today, and Nandy finds herself defending a very similar approach under Keir Starmer’s government.

🤔 Ed Balls’ Bold Reminder

On ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Ed Balls didn’t hold back. He asked Nandy, “Why was it weak to try and do a trade deal in 2019, and why is it strong now, when other countries are retaliating and standing up to Trump? In your words, it’s pathetic.”

💬 Nandy’s Response: It’s Not ‘Pathetic’ Now

Nandy was quick to defend her position, insisting that trying to secure a trade deal isn’t pathetic. But, she added, Johnson’s approach—chasing photo opportunities without real action—was where the problem lay.

She explained, “It is of course in Britain’s interests to trade with the United States, and we have a very long and deep military and security relationship with them that has survived every president, including Trump.”

🤷‍♂️ Balls’ Final Verdict

Ed Balls wasn’t convinced. He wrapped up the conversation by saying: “So I think begging for a trade deal if you’re Keir Starmer is not pathetic, but it is if you’re Boris Johnson.”

It seems the political pendulum keeps swinging, and today’s leaders often have to defend positions they once criticised.
