US President Donald Trump is reportedly planning another controversial name change – this time for the Persian Gulf.
📢 From Persian Gulf to Arabian Gulf?
Trump is expected to announce the move during his trip to Saudi Arabia next week, declaring that the US will now refer to the Persian Gulf as the Arabian Gulf or the Gulf of Arabia.
😡 Iran Hits Back
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, wasted no time in responding. He said: “The name Persian Gulf, like many geographical designations, is deeply rooted in human history… Politically motivated attempts to alter the historically established name of the Persian Gulf are indicative of hostile intent toward Iran and its people, and are firmly condemned.”
He added that such moves are “an affront to all Iranians, regardless of their background or place of residence.”
Araghchi also warned that any such decision would have “no validity or legal effect,” adding it would only “bring the wrath of all Iranians from all walks of life and political persuasion in Iran, the US and across the world.”
🗺️ Gulf of Mexico Next?
Meanwhile, Republicans in the House of Representatives are set to vote on a bill that would rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
The bill, introduced by Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, instructs federal agencies to update all maps and documents within six months of the bill’s enactment.
Trump, who has previously hinted at the idea, reportedly said the change makes sense because the US does “most of the work there and it’s ours.”
