Remember Brexit? Oh, what fun we had.
So glad it all calmed down after the vote and we just got on with it…
Well, that obviously never happened, but in the last few days it has become as big an issue as it was when the referendum was held.
What is going on I hear you ask?
Nobody can be sure, as the world has gone mad but here are some of the most unhinged stuff that is flying about…
Deal
This is the main catalyst, Keir Starmer announced: “Today we struck a landmark deal with the EU. A deal that is in the national interest: delivering more jobs, cheaper bills and secure borders.”
And here is his explanation…
Anger
Let’s start with anger…
Suella Braverman wrote a piece in the Telegraph claiming: “Labour will never be forgiven for this appalling Brexit betrayal.”
One person in response wrote: “Betraying the biggest vote in British history! 17,410,742 voted to Leave And Starmer is telling us he doesn’t care. That we don’t count For nothing apart from a simpering smile from van der Leyen. This is Olympic class political suicide.”
Ouch!
Then James O’Brien and Brexit voter Richard had a ding-dong on the radio, which got a bit out of hand.
Kemi is not happy, she has labelled the agreement a “surrender” deal, and says that Prime Minister Keir Starmer has “taken us backwards”.
Shadow secretary of state for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Victoria Atkins adds that the deal has “sunk the United Kingdom’s fishing industry.”
The concession on fishing rights has been a focus for the Tories’ criticism, with Badenoch adding that “on fisheries, Britain is now in a worse position than the Faroe Islands.”
The Mail on Sunday…
The Daily Mail today…
The Daily Express also claims the “PM is hellbent on selling out our Brexit freedoms.”
Bit much?
Boris Johnson had a LOT to say…
Support
Well, Alastair Campbell had this to say to BoJo: “Oh do shut up. He is trying to undo some of the enormous damage you did with your dreadful deal and after your and Farage lies got us out in the first place. Sadly it won’t undo it all but at least national interest comes ahead of ambition and charlatanism. As for the Covid inquiry, just consider yourself lucky all your media pals have given up covering it.”
Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer has welcomed the UK-EU deal, calling the reset “good news” for people in the UK amid the cost of living crisis.
Campbell also wrote: “Despite all the damage Brexit has done, despite all the lies told and the promises broken by the charlatans who led the fight for it, despite all the bullshit fake patriotic coverage in the right wing rags over decades, the broadcasters continue to take their lead from the same people and papers who got us into the mess in the first place. The real surrender has been to their lies and propaganda. We will only properly fix the mess if we admit the scale of it and start to put those who led the campaign for it under the kind of scrutiny and pressure from which the media and mainstream political class has inexplicably spared them.”
Ed Davey wrote: “Social media this morning is a zombie apocalypse of dinosaur Tory politicians and right wing hangers-on hankering after the nasty Brexit wars of the last decade. Our country has moved on!”
David Osland wrote: “Brexiteers told us the main point of Brexit was restoring Britain’s ability to negotiate trade deals. And now Britain is negotiating trade deals, Brexiteers tell us it’s a betrayal of Brexit.”
“Brexiteers bricking it in case Keir Starmer surrenders their hard fought brexit benefits.”
Best for Britain responded to Tom Harwood’s claims, writing: “For about an hour” was, in fact, for seven-and-a-half minutes each, with the UK PM getting the last word, and then leading the Q&A session with the press. But this is such an excellent example of the mendacious, awful, and biased reporting today.”
In response to Kemi’s moans, Torsten Bell wrote: “Back in the real world, what has done huge damage to the UK fishing industry? The Tories’ Brexit deal – which risked knocking a staggering 30% off fishing output by creating huge barriers for a sector dependent on exporting to the EU.”
Dave Lawrence wrote: “The one thing that tells you that the deal with the EU is way better than anything seen before is the level of attack If it wasn’t then they would be silent – the fact Labour have done in a few months what Tories failed in 9 years and Farage never could infuriates them.”
Here is a bit of Tice, lucky you.
Here is a rational explanation of what is going on.
