Reform UK councillor Darren Grimes says he’s facing suspension from Durham County Council — because he’s refusing to take mandatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Net Zero training.
The former GB News host, who became deputy leader of the council after Reform’s shock win in May, revealed the potential disciplinary action in a post on X. He wrote:
“I was told today I face suspension for refusing to take DEI and Net Zero training — training which we as a council are opting to scrap. I was elected to serve my residents, not racist or alarmist ideology. I repeat: I will not be taking DEI or Net Zero training.”

Grimes’ declaration has kicked off a row over council obligations and political ideology. Supporters have praised his defiance, while critics say he’s undermining basic public service standards.

Durham County Council hasn’t confirmed whether a formal suspension process has begun — or what rules would be enforced — leaving the next steps murky.
Since taking power in May 2025, Reform UK has made sweeping changes to how the council presents itself. Among their first moves: removing the Pride and Ukraine flags, axing equality and climate change roles, and rebranding the council around the Union Jack.
Grimes has defended those changes, saying Reform is focused on “practical” issues — like potholes, bins, and council tax — and isn’t interested in “tokenism.”

💬 Critics say it’s just more culture war posturing
This isn’t Grimes’ first controversy. Opponents have long accused him of stoking division on social media, with past posts slammed as inflammatory.
His refusal to take DEI and Net Zero training is being called a “juvenile stunt” by some, and there’s growing pressure for the council to act decisively
