Reform UK has launched a flashy new tax proposal claiming to take from the rich and give to the poor – but critics are already calling it a golden ticket for billionaires.

💰 What is Reform’s ‘Britannia card’?

Nigel Farage’s party is proposing a one-off £250,000 “landing fee” for non-domiciled residents – also known as non-doms – which would grant them immunity from paying UK tax on overseas income, capital gains, and even inheritance.

In return, these wealthy individuals would receive a “Britannia card”, allowing them to bypass standard taxation rules for a decade.

📲 Where does the money go?

Reform says all the revenue generated from these payments would go directly to the lowest-paid 10% of full-time workers in the UK. If 6,000 non-doms sign up, that’s £1.5 billion raised – translating to £600 per person across 2.5 million workers.

Should uptake be higher, payments could reach £1,000 a year.

🧾 What’s in it for non-doms?

In short, a massive tax break. While cardholders would still pay tax on UK-based income, their international assets and inheritance would be off the hook. Reform says the plan is designed to reverse the “record-breaking and alarming exodus” of the ultra-wealthy, blaming current rules for chasing them away.

🧠 Is it actually ‘Robin Hood’ or just a rich man’s loophole?

Labour isn’t convinced. They’ve slammed the plan as “a golden ticket for foreign billionaires” and warned that it could mean higher taxes or NHS charges for ordinary people to make up the difference.

Reform counters that their plan is funded by scrapping net zero policies and slashing government waste.

🔍 Can it work?

The idea hinges entirely on rich non-doms buying in. Reform estimates 6,000 participants in a low scenario and 10,000 in a high one. But critics say many wealthy elites may prefer to leave the UK rather than buy into a controversial political scheme.

Farage is expected to officially unveil the plan in Westminster, touting it as a way to “restore the social contract” between rich and poor.
