Donald Trump called him a communist — but Zohran Mamdani wasn’t rattled. In fact, he laughed.
The Democratic Socialist and New York mayoral candidate took the smear in stride during a calm and confident interview on Meet the Press, where he addressed inequality, billionaires, and why he’s not bothered by Trump’s insults.
🗣️ ‘He’ll talk about how I look, sound, and where I’m from’
Mamdani told host Kristen Welker that Trump’s personal attacks don’t phase him — because they’re nothing more than a distraction.
“I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I’m from, who I am,” he said.
“Ultimately, he wants to distract from what I’m fighting for — and I’m fighting for the very working people he ran to empower and has since betrayed.”
📢 A Democratic Socialist, inspired by MLK
Asked why he identifies as a Democratic Socialist, Mamdani cited Dr Martin Luther King Jr. as a major inspiration.
“Call it democracy or call it Democratic Socialist. There has to be a better distribution of wealth for all of God’s children in this country,” he quoted.
He added that as income inequality narrows in some parts of America, it continues to grow in New York — and it’s time for that to change.
💰 ‘There should be no billionaires’
Mamdani didn’t hold back when it came to the ultra-rich.
“I don’t think we should have billionaires. It’s just too much money in a time of such inequality.”
That doesn’t mean he won’t work with them, though.
“I look forward to working with everyone — including billionaires — to make a city that is fairer for all of us.”
In short, Mamdani’s not here to play Trump’s game. He’s here to change the rules.
