A Pokémon live-action television series is currently in the planning phases at Netflix.

Joe Henderson, the showrunner of Lucifer, is attached to create and executive produce the programme, according to Variety.

There are currently no known details about the project, but sources have told Variety that it will be a live-action adaptation of the well-known franchise comparable to the recent comedic film Detective Pikachu.

Nintendo is notoriously protective of its numerous intellectual property rights, but the box office success of the Pokémon film Detective Pikachu likely contributes to the company’s confidence in developing a live-action TV series.

With $433 million in worldwide box office receipts, Detective Pikachu is the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

Also logical is Netflix as a Nintendo partner. The platform has hosted a number of Pokémon series over the past few years, including Pokémon Journeys and the Indigo League.

The streaming service also has a history of making live-action adaptations of different anime. It released Death Note in 2017 and is working on the upcoming Cowboy Bebop, and One Piece live-action shows.

The Pokémon franchise will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2021, and as part of the yearlong celebration, numerous new Pokémon games and shows have been announced.
