‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ is getting a live-action remake

It seems the trend of adapting animated pictures into live-action remakes is here to stay after the success of previous adaptions.

Disney has been remaking its vintage animated movies for many years. It seems the trend of adapting animated pictures into live-action remakes is here to stay, starting with favourites like The Jungle Book in 2016 and finding such popularity with 2019’s Aladdin that a sequel is in the works.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame live-action adaptation by Disney appears to have a similar storyline to the animated version. The novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame, written by Victor Hugo in 1833, served as inspiration for the synopsis, which is a classic story.

Quasimodo, an outcast that lives in the bell tower of Notre Dame, dreams about being a part of society. However, does the wicked priest Frollo have his ways of keeping him from achieving his dreams, while he himself falls in love with the mysterious gypsy girl, Esmeralda.

Even while just a small number of actors have been confirmed for the live-action remake so far, there is one person that moviegoers seem intent on having play Quasimodo.

Josh Gad is working on a new musical at Disney, following his success on Broadway in The Book of Mormon and his success in What We Do In The Shadows. You might recognise him as LeFou from Disney’s 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation or as Olaf from the animated film Frozen.

As Josh Gad is already one of the producers on Hunchback, we might also see him cast in one of the on-screen parts, as he seems to be the actor that fans want to play Quasimodo.

Imelda Staunton, Jack Black and Kelsey Grammer complete the cast as Quasimodo’s gargoyle friends’.

Release Date

The Hunchback of Notre Dame live-action adaptation is currently scheduled for release on July 19, 2024. This comes after the movie’s 2019 announcement and subsequent slow progress towards casting and production. When Hunchback appears on the big or small screen in the future, we can’t wait to watch it!
