David here isn’t a fan!

This is the biggest cost of backing Protocol 2/Windsor Frame-up – that we will be tied institutionally into EU RULES. That effects our freedom of manoeuvre and damages our ability to negotiate free trade deals. It is what the EU always wanted – to keep us tied. It’s a TRAP. https://t.co/A81uJRw2qf

DUP

The DUP has said it will vote against Rishi Sunak’s Brexit deal, saying while there has been “significant progress” to fix issues with the protocol “fundamental problems” remain.

Party officers made an unanimous decision to reject PM Rishi Sunak’s revised plan for post-Brexit trade arrangements in Northern Ireland, the DUP leader, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson.

“It does not deal with some of the fundamental problems at the heart of our current difficulties. There remain key areas of concern which require further clarification, reworking and change as well as seeing further legal text,” Donaldson said.

The headline reads: “Windsor Framework is old wine in a new bottle” – Contrary to British claims, there was no renegotiation of the Northern Ireland protocol.

Patrick Smyth writes: ‘except that there was no “renegotiation”. Had there been one, every EU state would now be embarking on a new process of treaty re-ratification, instead of simply noting minor amendments made to the protocol under its own provisions.

“A joint committee, including representatives of the UK and EU, is empowered to oversee the protocol implementation and, if necessary to its smooth functioning, amend its provisions. That is, a resolution to the EU Council notes, as long as “such decisions do not amend the essential elements of the [protocol] agreement.”’
