A new poll has revealed that the British trust the EU more than the UK Parliament.

Confidence in parliament has plummeted 10 points to just 22 per cent since the Brexit referendum.

Popularity of the EU has lagged behind parliament among Britons since the early 1980s, confidence in Brussels has now increased seven points to 39 per cent since Brexit.

Professor Bobby Duffy, director of the KCL Policy Institute said: “Confidence in parliament has halved since 1990; we’re among the least likely of more than 20 countries in the study to have confidence in the government.”

Pacific deal

The 11 members of are expected to soon reach broad agreement with Britain on it joining the partnership.

So in a desperate looks for some positive Brexit news the Telegraph has claimed that the Pacific trade deal will mean Britain can never join the EU, the comment piece claims ‘partnering with thr Pacific giants would be a huge win for post-Brexit Britain.”

However, it has been called out by James O’Brien, who tweeted: “Factually incorrect but emotionally intoxicating. Like almost all Brexit nonsense. Now designed exclusively for a dwindling constituency of people absolutely desperate for *anything* they can frame as a ‘win’.”

Landing on Mars would be a huge deal too. Among other things Britain is not going to do.

Here's the provision on possible withdrawal from the CPTPP. The claim that joining it means that the UK cannot rejoin the EU is obviously false. pic.twitter.com/Dec5X2vzq6

So will we get freedom of movement with Japan? Canada? Australia? Mexico? No. Thought not.

We're never going to trade with a bloc of disconnected countries on the other side of the world as much as we trade with a continent of half a billion people less than 20 miles away across the channel that you can drive to.

Thread

This thread is a must-read

1.

"Pacific trade deal is a Brexit victory – whatever the doubters say"

The actual economic benefits are a rounding error. But that's not the point at all…

Shanker Singham helps us understand the true purpose of the deal by saying the evil bits out loud.https://t.co/KYz5HkNAXX pic.twitter.com/snPi5hj7Zt

2.

The Telegraph published his article, and then linked to it from another article: "Joining the CPTPP could bring many opportunities for the UK".

But Singham's article contains ZERO real opportunities.

The only benefit is the chance to sabotage the UK's relationship with the EU.

4.

Of course, we will always be able to get out of the CPTPP.

But just like exiting the EU was a lengthy and painful exercise which diminished trust in the UK on the world stage, backing out of another huge trading bloc (not the right one for us) will be similarly fraught.

Finally, I'll just leave this here, in case Dominic Raab or others of his ilk wander in… pic.twitter.com/1IAXZNZT7i

Also this thread…

I see its "this trade deal is going to be really amazing / bad" morning, and I need to summon all my centrist trade energies in the hope a few people might see through the hype both ways and realise that UK joining CPTPP doesn't make that much impact any which way.
