Campaign tactics

So how is Rishi Sunak planning on winning the next election?

Well, the focus is a war on potholes, as campaigning for the local elections gets under way.

On a visit to Darlington he said new powers would help ensure firms repair roads properly after carrying out works, through more fines and inspections.

The prime minister said the Tories were “delivering locally for the North East”, with the government putting more money into fixing potholes and clamping down on utility companies which left behind damage after digging up roads.

“There’ll be more fines, more inspections, that’s also going to help. We want to make sure it’s easy for people to get around,” he added.

Or this? maybe he could do the same with water companies?

Rishi Sunak is going to ‘clampdown on potholes’?

How, by fining them £1,000?

Small boats

Rishi Sunak has appeared to defend the home secretary’s use of the term ‘invasion’ to describe the arrival of asylum seekers into the UK on small boats.

Under questioning by MPs on Tuesday afternoon, Sunak said “it’s very clear that the scale of the problem is significant and growing”.

Mr Sunak was asked by the chair of the Home Affairs Committee: “Is it politically charged to use the word ‘invasion’ in relation to the small boats problem?”

He refused to answer the question directly, instead appearing to defend Suella Braverman’s use of language by stressing the “scale” of the crisis.

Well, by the BBC Question time crowd the idea of flying these people from small boats to Rwanda doesn’t seem like a vote winner…
