Another water firm has decided to hand out a huge sum to its shareholders, as reports of sewage in waterways and leaks dominates the headlines.

The decision by United Utilities to hand more than £300m to shareholders has prompted fresh anger over foul water.

They supply over 3 million homes and 200,000 businesses across the north-west of England.

Also, last year Environment Agency data gave the company the title of England’s most polluting water company.

Shareholders

But it isn’t just United Utilities’ handing out cash to its investors, the day before Severn Trent, one of Britain’s biggest water companies, also raised its dividend to £261m.

Madness

The hand out was slammed as “madness” by Tim Farron, environmental spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats.

Farron added: “United Utilities are making a mockery by destroying our precious lakes and rivers with sewage, all while handing out bumper dividends.

“The system is broken when their execs and shareholders are rewarded with millions of pounds for destroying the environment.”

What does this answer even mean?!

Industry refuses to fix sewage crisis

Also, the water industry has refused to fix sewage crisis unless funded by increased household bills.

The industry body says funding from water companies would be ‘one of the largest charitable donations in the history of the planet.’

Make of that what you will….
