A Downing Street car crash really shouldn’t have people chuckling.

Back in the day the IRA fired a rocket launcher down the street. In 1991, members of the Provisional IRA fired homemade mortar shells at No 10, injuring four people.

In more recent times, the threat of Islamist terrorists, has made the UK on high security alert for what seems like forever.

However, here is the moment, and it isn’t really a high speed collision by any means.

Obviously it had to be treated as if it was a clear and present danger to the PM and other politicians.

A man has been arrested after a car crashed into the Downing Street gates.

The Met Police said he was held on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving, but the incident is not being treated as terror related.

One witness said he saw officers pointing Tasers at a man, who was held “face to the floor” as he was detained.

The area in Whitehall, the main road which runs through the heart of several government offices, was partially evacuated following the incident at 16:20 BST.

The Metropolitan police have released an updated statement.

“A small cordon remains in place outside Downing Street after a car collided with the gates earlier this afternoon.

“The incident is being dealt with by local officers in Westminster and isn’t currently being treated as terror-related.”

Sorry media, but you're going to have to be more specific than 'car crash in Downing Street' if you want it to sound like something new has happened.

Back to work?

Today, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said he would back further interest rate rises by the Bank of England, even if they risk plunging the UK into recession, in order to combat soaring inflation.

Hunt was asked if he was comfortable with the central bank doing whatever was required to bring down inflation, even if that means it could cause a recession, he told Sky News: “Yes, because in the end, inflation is a source of instability. And if we want to have prosperity, to grow the economy, to reduce the risk of recession, we have to support the Bank of England in the difficult decisions that they take.”
