The DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU strategy, the first section of which is dubbed Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will bring the monster hero Swamp Thing to the big screen.

As a member of the cast of the 2017 fighting game Injustice 2 and the star of his own live-action TV series on the DC Universe streaming service, the character has had his fair share of cross-media attention in recent years.

Unfortunately, that show only had one season, and the service itself has since been discontinued.

A Swamp Thing movie, which is slated to “explore the dark origins” of the character, and because of this it will be much scarier than any of DC’s other projects.

Gunn notes that “this is a much more horrific film, but we’ll still have Swamp Thing interact with the other characters.”

Who is Swamp Thing?

Brilliant researcher Alec Holland was working on a “bio-restorative compound” that had the potential to fundamentally alter both botany and medicine.

However, Holland’s lab was destroyed when he refused to sell his formula. Holland dove into the surrounding marsh to escape after being drenched in flaming chemicals. He instead materialised as a massive, plant-like monster.

Holland was left to roam the bayou and avenge anyone who attacked his new home after his previous life had ended.

Swamp Thing doesn’t really interact much with people. Abigail Arcane, the only woman able to see and love the guy behind the moss, is one of them.

The other is John Constantine, who initially appeared in Saga of the Swamp Thing as a supporting character before branching off onto his own adventures.

Who will be cast and when is it released?

Not much is currently known about Swamp Thing or the majority of DC Studios’ next projects. However, a recent Variety story indicates that director James Mangold is in discussions to helm the Swamp Thing movie.

Mangold will next helm Going Electric, a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet, as well as a Buster Keaton biopic starring Rami Malek. He is presently finishing up the sequel to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The release date is currently unknown, but it is rumoured to be late 2024.
