Hobbs & Shaw was a HUGE success at the box office — grossing more than $760 million worldwide, but what about Hobbs & Shaw 2 ?

The Fast & Furious film franchise, often simply referred to as “Fast & Furious,” is a highly successful series of action films centered around street racing, heists, and espionage.

The series is known for its high-octane car chases, elaborate action sequences, and a cast of characters who have become iconic in the world of action cinema.

So is it coming? It seems to make sense to make a new one right? Well, perhaps not.

Universal quickly greenlit a Hobbs & Shaw sequel, after its box office success, but after more than four years, little has happened.

In December 2022, Kelly McCormick, the producing partner of Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch, shared a disappointing Hobbs & Shaw 2 update, reported Screen Rant,

She said: “We would love to [make Hobbs & Shaw 2]. There’s no conversations at this time.”

It seems it is when (or if) Dwayne Johnson’s hectic filming schedule ever has a gap: “Dwayne’s a really busy guy and, you know, he would be the one to motivate all of that. So, you know, we’re ready if he wants to.

However in March 2020, Johnson confirmed that development on “Hobbs & Shaw 2” was underway.

Johnson also said: “When it comes to ‘Hobbs and Shaw,’ which we loved and [I] loved making that movie, there’s an idea that I had. I called [Universal Pictures chairwoman] Donna Langley, called our writer Chris Morgan, our producer Hiram Garcia, and I said, ‘I have this idea and this direction.”

Confused? So are we.

It would be a box office hit, the film industry loves a profit, it seems a no-brainer.

Sadly, the wheels have come off it seems.

Fast and furious history

Here is a list of the main “Fast & Furious” movies in chronological order:

The Fast and the Furious (2001): The original film that started it all, directed by Rob Cohen, introduces audiences to the world of illegal street racing and the character Dominic Toretto, played by Vin Diesel.

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003): The second installment in the series, directed by John Singleton, sees Brian O’Conner, played by Paul Walker, teaming up with a childhood friend to take down a drug lord.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006): The third film in the series, directed by Justin Lin, follows a new character, Sean Boswell, played by Lucas Black, as he becomes involved in the Tokyo street racing scene.

Fast & Furious (2009): This film marks the return of the original cast, including Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Michelle Rodriguez, as they reunite for a heist.

Fast Five (2011): Directed by Justin Lin, this film shifts the franchise’s focus towards heist action, with the characters pulling off a major job in Rio de Janeiro.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013): The sixth installment continues the heist theme and pits the crew against a skilled mercenary, Owen Shaw.

Furious 7 (2015): Directed by James Wan, this film is notable for being Paul Walker’s last appearance in the franchise following his tragic death. The film incorporates digital effects to complete his scenes and offers a fitting tribute to his character.

The Fate of the Furious (2017): This film, directed by F. Gary Gray, sees Dom Toretto going rogue, which puts him in conflict with his own team.

F9: The Fast Saga (2021): The most recent installment in the franchise at the time of my last update, directed by Justin Lin, continues to explore the Toretto family’s history and features more over-the-top action sequences.
