Fans of 10 Things I Hate About You might be in for a treat, as the film’s director, Gil Junger, has confirmed that not just one, but three sequels are in the pipeline. In a recent chat with People, Junger revealed he’s teaming up with original producer Andrew Lazar for a follow-up trilogy.
The first instalment, 10 Things I Hate About Dating, will be followed by 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.
💔 A Trilogy of Trouble
Junger said, “10 Things I Hate About Dating is definitively in the works as a feature film. We’re developing it right now.”
He also hinted at the possibility of some familiar faces returning. While he hasn’t locked in the original cast, he’s keen to work with Julia Stiles again, praising her character, Kat Stratford, for “speaking to young women in a very powerful way.”
“If it resonates with [the original cast] and I can have some cameos or even real parts, I’d love [that],” he added, even suggesting Larry Miller, who played Kat’s overprotective dad, might make a comeback.
🎥 Honouring Heath Ledger
The original 10 Things I Hate About You, a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, starred Stiles as the sharp-tongued Kat and the late Heath Ledger as her brooding love interest, Patrick Verona. Ledger passed away in 2008, and when asked if the new films would honour his legacy, Junger responded warmly.
“I think that’s a beautiful idea, and the answer is now going to be yes. …He deserves to be loved.”
👀 What to Expect
While details are still under wraps, it’s clear Junger has high hopes for this new trilogy. If it captures even a fraction of the original’s wit and charm, it could be a worthy addition to the franchise – and a nostalgic trip for fans who grew up quoting “I burn, I pine, I perish.”
