Filming has started for Scott Derrickson’s highly anticipated sequel, The Black Phone 2. The director shared the exciting news on social media, confirming production is now underway.
Universal and Blumhouse have set the release date for The Black Phone 2 for 17 October 2025. Fans can look forward to seeing Ethan Hawke reprise his chilling role as The Grabber. The original cast, including Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon, Incoming), Madeleine McGraw (Toy Story 4, Secrets of Sulphur Springs), Jeremy Davies (Justified), and Miguel Mora (The Black Phone), will also return. Additionally, Demián Bichir (The Nun) has joined the cast.
The Team Behind the Sequel
Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, who worked on the first film, will write and produce the sequel, with Derrickson directing. The original film was inspired by Joe Hill’s short story.
Recap of the First Film
The first Black Phone introduced audiences to Finney (played by Thames), a shy 13-year-old who is abducted by a sadistic killer, The Grabber (Hawke). Trapped in a soundproof basement, Finney discovers a disconnected phone that mysteriously allows him to communicate with the killer’s previous victims. These spirits are determined to help Finney avoid their fate.
Positive Reception and Success
The first film, presented by Universal and Blumhouse and produced by Derrickson and Cargill’s Crooked Highway, was a box office hit. It earned $161 million worldwide. In a review for Bloody Disgusting, it was noted: “Derrickson and Cargill revive the same traits and structure of Sinister to transform Joe Hill’s short story into a feature-length nightmare full of ghostly kids, violence, and unforgettable performances.”
Hints About the Sequel
Although plot details for The Black Phone 2 are still under wraps, Derrickson hinted at a potential direction during an interview with ComicBook.com. He shared: “Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to The Black Phone. If this movie does well, I’m going to do it. He’s got a great idea, and I really liked it. Joe’s very protective and personal about his material, but he came to me with the idea, and I thought, ‘That’s how you do a sequel to The Black Phone. That’s terrific.’”
Fans eagerly await what Derrickson and the team have in store for this follow-up to the 2022 horror success.
