Paul King, director of Wonka, has shared an exciting update on the status of a potential sequel. Speaking at the premiere of Paddington in Peru, King revealed that work is underway on Wonka 2, but the film is still in its early stages. Currently, only half of a first draft of the script exists. However, King remains optimistic, stating he has a strong vision for Willy Wonka’s next adventure.
The Future of Willy Wonka: A Global Adventure?
While details are sparse, King hinted that Wonka 2 might take Willy on a globe-trotting journey. “I’ll try to get some international travel in it,” he teased, adding that he’s hoping for some air miles from this project. King’s comments suggest that the sequel could introduce new locations and rare ingredients, further expanding the fantastical world created in Wonka.
What to Expect in Wonka’s Next Chapter
The original film ended with Willy Wonka (Timothée Chalamet) breaking free from a corrupt chocolate monopoly and setting out to innovate in candy-making. The story laid the foundation for Wonka’s character to evolve into the chocolatier known from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The movie hinted at a larger, magical world, with exotic ingredients like “Yeti sweat” and “giraffe milk,” implying Willy’s journey is only just beginning.
Lofty the Oompa Loompa’s Redemption Arc
Another unresolved story in Wonka is that of Lofty, the Oompa Loompa played by Hugh Grant. By the film’s end, Lofty joins Wonka as his chief taster, despite being exiled from his homeland. In a sequel, Willy’s travels could take him to Lofty’s homeland, potentially redeeming Lofty and explaining how more Oompa Loompas came to work alongside Wonka.
