Rachel Zegler, set to star in Disney’s live-action Snow White, has issued a public apology following backlash over her reaction to Donald Trump’s re-election. The 23-year-old actress initially shared her frustration on Instagram, which sparked controversy across social media.
Zegler’s Original Post
Last week, Zegler took to Instagram to express her feelings about Trump’s victory. Her post included strong statements such as, “May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace,” and, “there is a deep sickness in this country.”
The reaction was swift, particularly from conservative voices, with many vowing to boycott Disney’s upcoming $200 million Snow White remake, set to release on 25 March.
A Sincere Apology
On Thursday night, Zegler shared a follow-up post on Instagram, acknowledging her earlier comments. She wrote:
“Hi everyone, I would like to sincerely apologise for the election post I shared on Instagram last week. I let my emotions get the best of me. Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse.”
She added, “I firmly believe that everyone has the right to their opinion, even when it differs from my own. I am committed to contributing positively towards a better tomorrow.”
Backlash from Conservatives
Zegler’s original comments drew sharp criticism, with MAGA supporters and commentators condemning her statements. Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly went as far as to label Zegler a “pig” and accused Disney of double standards, comparing her remarks to the firing of actress Gina Carano.
Past Controversies
This isn’t the first time Zegler has faced criticism from conservatives. Comments she made last year about modernising Snow White also sparked debate.
Speaking about the updated film, she said: “She’s not dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader her late father told her she could be.” She also called the original 1937 film “extremely dated,” referencing its portrayal of women and the love story with a “guy who literally stalks her.”
Zegler acknowledged the jokes about the remake being “PC Snow White,” saying, “Yeah, it is—because it needed that.”
Changes to Snow White
The live-action remake has faced delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and reported changes to the film, including adjustments to the depiction of the Seven Dwarfs. The film stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, and Martin Klebba as Grumpy.
