Barry Keoghan as The Joker ? It is a question that many have asked, and he actually already has, in a small way, which you can see later.

There have been several live-action Joker actors, including Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and Joaquin Phoenix’s versions of the Batman villain.

The DC Universe will introduce a new Batman continuity, meaning a new Joker may well be featured in the new films in the franchise.

Barry Keoghan

Barry Keoghan had a cameo role in The Batman, and a deleted scene released online to showcase his version of the Joker.

‘The actor’s take on the iconic Batman villain is very clearly inspired by Conrad Veidt’s role in The Man Who Laughs‘, reports ScreenRant.

His own troubled background?

Keoghan was born on 18 October 1992, and grew up in Summerhill, Dublin, Ireland.

It was a very tough upbringing, one assumes, as his mother struggled with drug addiction throughout her adult life and died when he was 12.

He spent seven years in foster care, in 13 foster homes before he was rasied, with his brother, by their grandmother, aunt, and older sister Gemma.

As a child, Keoghan appeared in school plays but was banned for “messing about”.

He attributes his film education after sneaking into films with friends at a cinema, from which he was eventually barred.

We don’t want to link his talent with his past, but perhaps there are parts (or indeed pain) of his youth, that he could bring to the role as the Joker, and perhaps become the most remembered ever?

The Joker in Batman history – Spoilers Alert

Batman (1989) – Directed by Tim Burton, this film featured Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Nicholson’s Joker was a gangster named Jack Napier who fell into a vat of chemicals, transforming him into the Joker. He had a charismatic and flamboyant personality, with a permanent smile on his face.

The Dark Knight (2008) – Directed by Christopher Nolan, this film featured Heath Ledger as the Joker. Ledger’s portrayal is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and intense performances in cinematic history. His Joker is an agent of chaos, with a unique and unsettling appearance, complete with smeared makeup and scars on his face. Ledger’s Joker is more focused on creating chaos and anarchy in Gotham City rather than personal gain.

Suicide Squad (2016) – Directed by David Ayer, this film featured Jared Leto as the Joker. Leto’s Joker had a more contemporary and gangster-like appearance, with tattoos and a flashy wardrobe. However, his portrayal received mixed reviews from both fans and critics.

Joker (2019) – Directed by Todd Phillips, this film is a standalone origin story for the Joker and is not connected to the larger Batman cinematic universe. Joaquin Phoenix played Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who becomes the Joker. This version of the Joker is more sympathetic and explores the character’s descent into madness.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) – While not a Batman film per se, Jared Leto’s Joker made a cameo appearance in the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League. This appearance was part of a post-apocalyptic future scenario and featured a different look for the character.
