The long-awaited Scary Movie reboot, first announced at CinemaCon, has finally taken shape. For the first time in 18 years, the original creators are reuniting for a new screenplay. The film, known for its comedic takes on horror films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, is set to start filming next year, with a theatrical release planned. The Wayans brothers and Rick Alvarez are back to write and produce the movie.

The Wayans return to their comedic roots

Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans developed the Scary Movie franchise, with Keenen writing and directing the first two films and Marlon and Shawn both writing and starring. Their return marks a significant reunion for the original creators and fans alike.

Miramax Boss Jonathan Glickman expressed his excitement about the reboot: “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind this beloved franchise. The timing is perfect, and we’re fortunate to have Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn’s unique comedic vision back on the big screen for audiences worldwide.”

The Wayans brothers shared their enthusiasm, saying, “We couldn’t be more excited to be part of the new Scary Movie and to work together again. This is a franchise we created over 20 years ago, and we remember people laughing in the aisles. We hope to bring that experience back to theatres.”

A franchise with a strong legacy

The Scary Movie franchise grossed over $896 million worldwide across five films. Released in 2000, the original film made a strong impact, grossing $42.5 million in its opening weekend and setting records as one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror comedies and for a Black director.

The Wayans in the spotlight

Marlon Wayans will star in Justin Tipping’s psychological sports thriller HIM, produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, due out in September 2025. He is currently on his Wild Child Tour. Shawn Wayans and Rick Alvarez, the writer behind other Marlon Wayans films like Fifty Shades of Black and Sextuplets, are also heavily involved.
