Shell’s profits have been reported this week and they are out of this world, it was the highest amount they have made in 115 years.

Their income comes after energy prices surged last year following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Profits hit $39.9bn (£32.2bn) in 2022, double last year’s total.

Labour’s shadow climate change secretary Ed Miliband said: “As the British people face an energy price hike of 40% in April, the government is letting the fossil fuel companies making bumper profits off the hook with their refusal to implement a proper windfall tax.

“Labour would stop the energy price cap going up in April, because it is only right that the companies making unexpected windfall profits from the proceeds of war pay their fair share.”

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said: “No company should be making these kind of outrageous profits out of Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.

“They must tax the oil and gas companies properly and at the very least ensure that energy bills don’t rise yet again in April.”

But it was Chris Packham’s tweet about Shell that has gone viral.

He wrote: “We are being cooked , choked and taken to the cleaners . . . if we ever become anyone’s ancestors they will ask ‘what the hell were those mugs doing ? They stood by and let them burn the world’ . . . Shell reports highest profits in 115 years.”

This was a sarcastic take by the twitter account Sir Michael Take CBE. He wrote: “Huge congratulations to Shell! A well run & profitable post Brexit company. Maybe we could get some of their executives to run our failing schools & inept NHS. And let’s get Shell employees to replace the snowflakey, stay at home civil servants moaning about poor Dominic Raab!”
