Romania has seen a political earthquake as Nicusor Dan beat hard-right favourite George Simion in Romanian election.
The result is a dramatic turnaround from the first round of voting a few weeks ago when Mr Simion was well ahead.
Simion, a hard-right candidate, cozied up to U.S. President Donald Trump, ripping pages from his MAGA agenda, while threatening to stop military support for Ukraine.
Romania’s last election was annulled after its highest court ruled the leading candidate, nationalist Calin Georgescu, should be disqualified due to claims of electoral interference by Russia.
After polls closed, Mr Dan said “elections are not about politicians” but about communities and that in the latest vote “a community of Romanians has won, a community that wants a profound change in Romania”.
“When Romania goes through difficult times, let us remember the strength of this Romanian society,” he said.
“There is also a community that lost today’s elections. A community that is rightly outraged by the way politics has been conducted in Romania up to now.”
Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also thrilled by the outcome, as Dan promises to keep Romania on its pro-EU, pro-NATO pathway.
“For Ukraine — as a neighbour and friend — it is important to have Romania as a reliable partner. And we are confident we will. By working together, we can strengthen both our countries and our Europe,” Zelenskyy said.
“I look forward to further developing the strategic partnership between our friendly nations for the sake of their stability, security, and prosperity,” Zelenskyy added.
Anonymous shared a clio and wrote: “Millions of Romanians are celebrating tonight nationwide. This is what democracy looks like, despite Russia’s insane manipulation campaign and army of influencer-propagandists, the people saw right through the bullshit and made the right call for their future.”
Jurgen Nauditt shared another video and wrote: “In Romania, Bucharest Mayor Dan celebrates his victory in the presidential elections. Europe is celebrating with him. Putin has lost.”
Tate’s
Andrew and his brother Tristan Tate don’t seem too happy with the result. Trisitan wrote: “Well Romania we had a good run. Thanks for the pleasant memories.”
One person wrote in response: “By the tone of this post, I assume new leadership in Romania is going to tighten up their response to human trafficking and rape.”
Another wrote: “By the tone of this post, I assume new leadership in Romania is going to tighten up their response to human trafficking and rape.”
It seems the brothers will not be extradited to the UK.
