GB News presenter claims govt handing out free cars to ‘Motability mafia’ – the Don responses

"Explain why you think disabled people are second class citizens Tom?"

The Motability Scheme helps disabled people in the UK lease a new car, scooter, or powered wheelchair. It’s available to those receiving specific disability benefits, who exchange their payments for a leased vehicle.

The scheme includes insurance, vehicle tax, and breakdown cover. Eligible customers can also upgrade to a new car every three years.

There’s been plenty of chatter in the media about people driving high-end cars — think Mercedes and BMWs — through the scheme. Whether true or not, the reality is that many disabled people rely on this transport to live independently.

GB News Jumps In

Instead of criticising billionaires for avoiding taxes, GB News presenter Tom Harwood decided to take aim at disabled people.

Reacting to the Motability news, Harwood suggested that the government should stop people from “playing the system” by handing out less desirable cars.

He posted:
“Make all the free cars the government gives out to people with autism or ADHD look like this and see how many people really need to claim them.”

Yes, really.

Make all the free cars the government gives out to people with autism or ADHD look like this and see how many people *really* need to claim them. https://t.co/x8ML90MOc7 pic.twitter.com/pGw9fjlfDZ

Oh behave yourself. “Free” cars are not “given out” to anyone. People surrender PIP payments from their higher mobility awards (and other similar benefits). Is it hate disabled people weak or something? Then next week, back to migrants? Is that how it works?

Explain why you think disabled people are second class citizens Tom? Why do they only deserve to drive around in cars you deem fit for them and that have the fact they are disabled clearly labelled on the side? I thought we were hating migrants this week. Have we moved onto…

Your claim that all Autistic people are handed free cars is not based on reality. It is peddling disinformation. Maybe get your facts right?

8.

You were corrected on this the last time you posted this. You are now just blatantly lying about this now.

You don't even have the courage to tell the truth. Spineless, Tom. Spineless.

9.

They are not free cars. The people who have them give up part of their mobility benefits for one. These people have a range of issues in moving about.
Would you have them just sit at home waiting to die?

— Steven (@Steven41849941) March 16, 2025

10.

1. Motability cars aren't free.
2. No-one is eligible for the highest rate of mobility PIP (unable to walk for 20m repeated & reliably in a reasonable time) for ADHD or Autism alone. No-one.

Tom's a liar or a fool who couldn't be arsed to do the most basic research. https://t.co/Oxp4mXlCKM
