Have Simply Red put ‘lefty lawyer’ debate to bed?

"Mick knows..." wrote one person in response.

At yesterday’s PMQs the PM Sunak slammed Labour leader Starmer as ‘just another lefty lawyer.’

It is a line that the Tories have rolled out for years now.

It came out as the two tussled over the new law to block asylum applications by people who attempt to cross channel in small boats, or whatever type of raft they try and use.

Sunak said Starmer was ‘just another lefty lawyer’ standing in the way of this legislation, that even his own party have admitted may break the law, only a bit though they claim!

Lefty lawyers

Boris Johnson was keen on using the phrase too.

Speaking to the Conservative Party conference in October 2020, the PM said that the criminal justice system was being “hamstrung by what the Home Secretary would doubtless and rightly call the lefty human rights lawyers and other do-gooders”.

Priti Patel was accused of putting the lives and safety of lawyers and court staff at risk after she branded those defending migrants as “lefties” and “do-gooders.

The Law Society of England and Wales called Johnson’s speech “deeply concerning”; the Bar Council went for “shocking and troubling”.

In response, at the time, lawyer Polly Glynn tweeted: “So, this week I had to put extra security in our offices directly as a result of the government attacks on lawyers which makes us vulnerable to physical attacks from right wing extremists. I don’t think that this is a sentence that a lawyer should have to write in a democracy.”

Simply right?

So it was left to pop star Mick Hucknall otherwise known as the core pop star in Star Simply red to write: “Gimme a lefty lawyer over a fascist any old time of day.”
