Coventry takeaway fined after flies and filthy conditions exposed

⚠️ Owner didn’t think it was that bad — council and court disagreed!

A Chinese takeaway in Coventry has been exposed for having flies throughout and filthy conditions in its kitchen.

Food safety officers discovered the grim situation at Chef Wang on Torrington Avenue during an inspection on 7 June 2023.

What they found was shocking — poor hygiene, dirty cloths, and staff not wearing proper protective clothing. The council said the cleaning standards were well below acceptable levels, both for day-to-day cleaning and deeper sanitation.

Flies, Dirt, and Poor Cleaning

The inspection revealed flies buzzing around the food preparation areas and deteriorated cleaning cloths in use. Staff were also found wearing dirty protective clothing — or none at all.

The council said the business needed major improvements to meet food safety standards. Following the inspection, they worked with the owners to clean up the premises.

On 27 July 2023, after a request for a re-inspection, the takeaway managed to improve its hygiene rating to a 3 — meaning standards were generally satisfactory.

Owner Didn’t See the Problem

When questioned about the poor conditions, Liang Zheng, the former operator of Chef Wang, reportedly didn’t grasp the seriousness of the situation.

The council stated that Zheng’s cleaning standards were far below those required by food hygiene laws.

In March 2025, Zheng admitted to three food hygiene offences at Coventry Magistrates’ Court:

  • Failing to keep the premises clean.
  • Failing to protect food from contamination.
  • Failing to maintain hygiene procedures based on HACCP principles (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points).

Zheng received a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay ÂŁ3,377.58 in costs, plus a ÂŁ26 victim surcharge.

Mixed Results in Follow-Up Inspections

Chef Wang has faced several inspections since the 2023 incident.

In June 2024, an unannounced visit resulted in a hygiene rating of 1 — meaning major improvements were needed. However, after another inspection in August 2024, the rating improved to 4 — showing good hygiene standards.

Council Issues a Warning

Following the court case, Councillor Khan, cabinet member for policing and equalities, stressed the importance of maintaining high standards.

“It is vital that food businesses in Coventry maintain clean and safe conditions at all times to protect customers’ health.”

He added that this case serves as a reminder for all food businesses to ensure their kitchens are spotless and staff are properly trained.
