The Brecon Beacons national park is dropping its English language name and scrapping its logo of a fiery greenhouse gas-emitting beacon, and it has sent the people you would expect into orbit!

The Welsh Conservative shadow minister for Mid-Wales James Evans said: “I am concerned that the whole rebranding exercise by the national park is not a priority for the people and the businesses who live in the park. Many of the residents in the area will also be wondering how much the rebranding exercise is going to cost.”

However, the Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds said: “Other countries like New Zealand see the use of their indigenous languages such as Māori as not only key to protecting their history and culture, but also as a key marketing tool. There is no reason we shouldn’t be doing so in Wales.”

Plaid Cymru’s spokesperson for the Welsh language, Heledd Fychan, said: “This decision by the national park is a positive step in normalising the use of Welsh.

“In reclaiming our original Welsh names, we can reclaim our heritage, which is vital if we want our language to continue to play a role in Wales’s future.”

Here are a few more…

1.

More eco lunacy! The Brecon Beacons renamed "Bannau Brycheiniog" because wood-burning braziers, from which its name is taken, "no longer appropriate as they try to make the area net zero by 2035" 😩https://t.co/Bf3dPr7PkM

Maybe they should read this!

Settling in for a day watching the Gammon's implode in apoplectic rage on hearing the news that the Welsh have decided to use Bannau Brycheiniog instead of the Anglicised "Brecon Beacons"

Well,

Get over it,

This is Wales,

NOT England… pic.twitter.com/kbgJuaeXk1

2.

Brecon Beacons hasn’t “changed” its name. It’s always been Bannau Brycheiniog, it’s just that the English is being dropped.

You already say “Pen y Fan”, “Corn Du” and “Cribyn”, so what’s the problem?
