Dozens of leaders and dignitaries – including Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Prince William – joined an estimated 400,000 mourners who lined the streets of Rome and gathered inside St Peter’s Square itself.
Trump and Zelensky met inside St Peter’s Basilica before the funeral – Zelensky says the meeting “has potential to become historic, if we achieve joint results”
Pope Francis was then buried at Santa Maria Maggiore basilica following his funeral in the Vatican.

Breaking dress code
Trump was accused of breaking the dress code for Pope Francis’s funeral
The dress code for the funeral at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City required men to wear a dark suit with a black tie and a black button on the left lapel, but Trump wore a blue suit. Melania by contrast, wore a black dress and black veil.
Volodymyr Zelensky did not wear a formal suit, instead showing up in the black military attire he has worn consistently since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
Left early
Trump and his wife Melania, who by contrast wore a black dress and black veil, then left the ceremony as soon as it was over, rather than waiting until after the burial.
