Rachel Reeves has tried to get the nation going with a rallying cry on X.
However, it comes as the UK inflation rate jumped to 3.5% in the year to April, its highest level since February last year, the Office for National Statistics has said.
It was dubbed awful April: households hit by sharp rises in energy and water bills, and – to a lesser extent – higher food prices.
Also, a rise in employer national insurance contributions and a boost to the national minimum wage also put pressure on companies to raise prices by more than City analysts had forecast.
The Bank of England has previously said it expects inflation to peak at 3.7% between July and September 2025 before dropping back to its 2% target.
Does seem so…
Rallying cry
Rachel Reeves wrote: “I know the cost of living is still weighing down on working people. That’s why we have increased the minimum wage, frozen fuel duty and begun rolling out free breakfast clubs in schools. But I’m determined we go further and faster to put more money in people’s pockets.”
